Shanghai, China — SHAO, led by New York-based designer Shao Yang, will make its China runway debut with a 40-look runway show at Labelhood Shanghai Fashion Week on March 31, 2026. The collection, Underworld Royale: Darkness Under Neon Lights, translates the formal codes of 1990s Golden Age Triad cinema into contemporary luxury tailoring. The show marks SHAO’s first runway showing outside the United States.
In the months leading into Shanghai Fashion Week, SHAO has built visible momentum across China’s fashion and entertainment landscape. Editorial placements, celebrity wear, and digital circulation across China’s leading social platforms have introduced SHAO’s tailoring language to Chinese audiences ahead of the runway.
“I don’t reconcile my two worlds. I let them argue,” says designer Shao Yang. “In those films, the gangster in a perfect suit was always in control. The suit was armor. The coat was character. I grew up watching these men one Brooklyn video store VHS rental at a time, my childhood parlor recast as a melodrama theatre, absorbing a visual language where formality was a survival strategy. This collection holds that tension.”
The Collection
Underworld Royale references an era when Golden Age Triad cinema commanded global attention on its own terms. From Chow Yun-fat’s razor-sharp suiting in John Woo’s The Killer to Johnnie To’s Election, where criminal hierarchies became operatic studies of loyalty, the collection draws from cinema that treated clothing as narrative architecture. Triad bosses dressed better than businessmen. Formal wear carried moral complexity. Tailoring held tension: power and vulnerability, honor and violence, loyalty and betrayal, built into every line.
Design Direction
The 40 looks are built on monochromatic discipline and architectural severity. Structured shoulders anchor elongated silhouettes. Wool suitings and formal fabrications are cut with noir formalism: sharp lapels, controlled volume, deliberate weight. Strategic interruptions of color punctuate the restraint. Proportions shift between fitted precision and dramatic draping, reflecting the cinematic tension between composure and threat. Hardware and embellishment operate as controlled opulence, signaling power without spectacle. Every construction choice serves the collection’s central discipline: clothing as professional armor for those who navigate hostile environments with dignity.

The Venue
The show will take place at Labelhood’s Hall A in Yongyuan Road Block, Jing’an District, Shanghai. The 520-square-meter industrial space, with exposed concrete and raw infrastructure beneath 2.9-meter lighting rigs, provides the spatial severity the collection demands.
About SHAO
Founded by Parsons-trained designer Shao Yang, SHAO lives at the intersection of tailoring mastery and cinematic world-building. Building on Yang’s expertise establishing The Tailory New York as New York’s premier destination for inclusive custom suiting, SHAO creates pieces defined by precision, proportion, and character. SHAO is for those who understand genuine luxury is not demonstration. It is feeling, construction, silhouette, and meaning earned through wear.
