When Liu Yuning’s styling team approached SHAO about dressing him for the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 closing ceremony, the challenge was one of balance. An international ceremony called for formality, but the team wanted a suit that would also feel expressive onstage. For designer Shao Yang, the commission offered an opportunity to develop ideas from SHAO’s AW26 collection around a specific performer and occasion, bringing subtle interventions to the familiar structure of a dark suit.
The resulting look comprised three custom pieces: a tonal pinstripe jacket with leather peekaboo detailing, matching tonal pinstripe trousers, and a white cotton twill shirt with a sharply pointed collar. Worn for Liu’s September 27 performance of《技能之约》, The Promise of Skills, the ensemble combined a clean, continuous silhouette with details that became more apparent in closer views. Those details would later become a focus of fan discussions, as audiences examined the jacket’s construction and the distinctive collar of the shirt.
A Formal Brief, with Room for Personality
The styling team’s starting point was the significance of the event. The clothes needed to convey composure and respect for the occasion while avoiding the stiffness that can come with conventional formal dressing. Rather than relying on conspicuous embellishment, Shao Yang approached the brief through proportion, material and layering, extending the relationship between tailoring and leather explored in SHAO’s AW26 collection.
Tonal pinstripes connect the jacket and trousers, giving the suit a subtle visual rhythm and emphasizing the length of Liu’s silhouette. A concealed fastening keeps the jacket’s front clean, directing attention toward its cut and the construction around the neckline. The double-layered lapel introduces depth, while a leather panel revealed within the tailoring adds a change in texture. Together, these elements give the suit a more individual character without disturbing its formal outline.
The shirt was developed as part of the same commission, allowing its collar to work directly with the jacket’s layered neckline. In white cotton twill, it creates a crisp contrast against the dark suit, with sharply pointed ends that make the collar a distinct part of the composition. Designing all three pieces together allowed SHAO to consider how each would frame the next, from the shirt at the face to the jacket and the uninterrupted line of the trousers.
How Fans Read the Look
The response on RedNote reflected an interest in the construction as much as the overall appearance. One widely liked post presented Liu’s outfit as an example of dressing for a major formal occasion, identifying it as a special SHAO commission and praising its balance of restraint and design. The author singled out the concealed fastening and leather panel, noting how these departures from a conventional suit brought individuality to an otherwise composed silhouette.
A separate post by TrimsLab focused on the shirt, describing its distinctive collar as a wing collar and discussing the style’s associations with ceremonial dressing. The author connected that formality to the importance of the WorldSkills stage, suggesting that the shirt helped the look meet the occasion. Across the two posts, the discussion returned to a similar observation: the outfit’s impact came from carefully chosen details within a restrained whole.
For a custom commission, that response is revealing. Features developed in conversation between designer and styling team became features audiences noticed independently. The leather insert, layered lapel and collar gave fans specific elements to examine and discuss, extending the life of the look beyond the performance itself.
The Significance of the Stage
The WorldSkills closing ceremony took place at the Shanghai World Expo Cultural Center, bringing together competitors and supporters to celebrate achievements across 64 skill competitions. More than 10,000 supporters were expected in the venue, with a livestream connecting the ceremony to audiences around the world. It was a setting in which performance formed part of a broader recognition of technical ability, dedication and years of training.
Invited as a special guest singer, Liu performed The Promise of Skills in Chinese and English. His participation carried a personal connection to the event: before becoming known for music and acting, he studied culinary skills at a vocational school in Dandong. His former school now serves as a Chinese training base for the competition’s baking team, linking his early education to the competitors being celebrated in Shanghai.
That history gave the appearance a resonance beyond its scale. Liu returned to a world connected to his own beginnings through the profession he has since built, performing for an audience whose achievements also depended on sustained practice and the development of a craft. The occasion called for clothes that could carry its ceremonial weight while allowing his presence as a performer to remain central.
SHAO’s commission answered that brief through a coordinated approach to all three garments. Drawing from AW26, Shao Yang adapted the collection’s tailoring and leather details to Liu and the setting, working with his styling team to give formal menswear greater depth and personality. The attention those details received afterward suggests the balance was visible: a suit appropriate to the stage, with enough distinction to hold an audience’s interest long after the final song.
